The unnamed narrator approaches her and learns that she is in the process of learning English so she leaves a handful of translated books in a local bar for her. In one story, the narrator is visiting with friends in Tangiers and notices a young woman staring at her, or, rather, staring at the books she is holding. Books frequently play a vital role in these incidents, as the books can serve as life lessons from their authors or as metaphors for particular kinds of experience. Claire-Louise Bennett gives the reader access to her narrator’s inner thoughts as she reflects on small, everyday incidents, from childhood, from life at university and from the years after, sorting out her adult life.
